How to use the scam checker well

Paste the message exactly as you received it, read the reasons, and treat the verdict as a starting point rather than an answer.

The scam checker reads the content of a message and looks for the patterns that scams reuse: manufactured urgency, payment outside a normal channel, a link that does not match the name shown beside it, and requests for information that a legitimate organisation would never ask for.

It is a text check. It does not open links, does not run attachments, does not read images or screenshots, and does not listen to voice notes. Whatever is not in the text is not part of the result.

Paste it exactly as it arrived

  • Include the sender address and the whole body, rather than a summary you typed yourself.
  • Do not fix spelling or formatting; broken formatting and odd capitalisation are signals in themselves.
  • Paste links unshortened if you can see the full address, and paste the link as a separate check as well.
  • For messages with images, describe what the image says in the text field, and remember that the image itself is not read.

Reading the verdict

  • Dangerous: several strong signals together. Act as though the message is hostile, and do not use its links or numbers.
  • Suspicious: something does not fit. Verify through a route you chose yourself, and never through the message.
  • Safe: no known signals were found in the text. This is not a guarantee — a well-written first message from a real person and an unheard-of scam can look identical.

The judgement the checker cannot make

  1. 1Ask what the sender wants you to do. Almost every scam ends in a payment, a credential or a piece of personal data.
  2. 2Ask whether they could have contacted you another way. Real organisations have procedures; scammers depend on this message being the first you hear of it.
  3. 3Check the link before opening it, and the address before replying.
  4. 4Check the phone number if the message asks you to call, because a call-back request is often the entire mechanism.
  5. 5Keep the message and report it. Reporting is what protects the next person.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a screenshot?

No. Images and screenshots are not read. Paste or type the text instead — if the message is an image, type out the significant parts.

Does a Safe verdict mean the message is fine?

No. It means no known signal was found in the text you provided. Use it as one input, alongside what the sender is asking you to do.

Do you store the messages I paste?

The check runs on the content you provide and is not kept as a message history. Nothing in the result requires an account, and there is no stored list of your checks.
